Mountain Top Removal is a contraversial form of coal mining used extensively throughout the coal fields of southern West Virginia.  The process strips layers of vegetation and rock to expose thin seams of coal lying beneath the surface.  The following mountains are all involved in the process; some are currently being mined while others have had their mining permits approved.
